Corn n' Oil
Corn n’ Oil is a classic tiki cocktail, and a fitting name for this retro-inspired kitchen. We had a great time working on this design, and our clients made some fun selections. We especially love this backsplash tile. It’s slightly smaller than a classic subway tile and looks great installed in the vertical stack pattern seen here, with the color variation between each tile adding visual interest. The terrazzo-style floor and flat panel cabinetry reference mid-century modern style while keeping it fresh and updated by pairing stained maple base cabinets with white uppers and pantry cabinets.
The original layout had a confined and awkward entry way with a closet right in front of the entry door. A lot of shuffling was required to enter the house and then close the door. That same closet wall extended into the kitchen, covering the side of the refrigerator, which was turned to the side and away from the main working area of the kitchen. We removed the closet and the wall next to the refrigerator and instead put in a smaller closet that wasn’t as deep and turned towards the kitchen. This opened the entry area and created space for a functional island in the kitchen. The clients opted for a glass door on the new closet with custom stained shelving to house their colorful Dutch oven collection.
Great design has the power to turn any challenge into an advantage.
